‎Real Madrid target Arsenal's William Saliba for summer defensive rebuild

‎Real Madrid have identified Arsenal defender William Saliba as their top transfer target to anchor a summer defensive overhaul, according to a report from Spanish outlet Marca. The 23-year-old French international is said to be the club’s preferred solution to reinforce a backline that has struggled in key moments this season, particularly during their Champions League quarter-final exit at the hands of Arsenal.

‎Los Blancos were eliminated from Europe’s elite competition after conceding five goals across two legs against the North London side. That performance reportedly intensified internal discussions over the need to rejuvenate a once-impervious defence. Saliba, who has grown into one of the world’s premier centre-backs under Mikel Arteta, has long been admired by Real’s chief scout Juni Calafat, who views him as an ideal long-term leader in defence.
‎Despite Saliba signing a new contract with Arsenal last season, Real Madrid are optimistic that the prospect of lining up alongside superstars such as Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, and Jude Bellingham could prove enticing. Saliba, recently named in the 2024 FIFA The Best World XI, has been instrumental in Arsenal’s rise as a domestic and European force this season, helping them maintain the Premier League's best defensive record with just 29 goals conceded in 35 matches.
‎While Saliba remains central to Arteta’s plans at the Emirates, the Gunners' recent title setback—Liverpool clinched the league after dismantling Tottenham—could influence the player's future considerations. Nevertheless, Arsenal remain in contention for European glory and are preparing for a pivotal Champions League semi-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
‎Marca also mentioned other defensive alternatives on Real Madrid’s radar, including Bournemouth’s rising star Dean Huijsen and Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji. However, it is Saliba who stands out as the “chosen one” for a club determined to restore its defensive dominance.
